How Does Botox Work?

Botox injections will stop the connection between nerves and muscles, essentially making it so a specific muscle can’t contract. The result is a relaxed and softened look.

What Happens During A Botox Procedure?

A Botox procedure takes mere minutes. It doesn’t require the use of anesthesia and is injected with a fine needle. Patients experience only minor discomfort. After your Botox treatment, you will not see the full effects until the next week. One week before your Botox procedure, it is important to avoid alcohol. If you are currently taking anti-inflammatory medications or aspirin, you need to stop doing so two weeks before your Botox appointment. These measures will help reduce bruising.

How Long Will Botox Last?

With your first Botox injection, you will see the reappearance of wrinkles and lines at about four months. As you get more injections, the muscles are trained to relax and look less severe over time.

What Are The Side Effects?

The most notable and common side effect is bruising. You may experience a headache within the first day or two after your procedure, but this is rare. Eye drooping can occur but typically ends after three weeks. Drooping may happen when the Botox moves around, so remember not to scratch or rub the treated area for 12 hours after your procedure. Also, do not lie down for one hour after your procedure.

Who Should Not Get Botox?

If you are breastfeeding, pregnant, or have a neurological disease, you should not get Botox injections. Remember that Botox does not work for all wrinkles, so talk with your doctor first to ensure your expectations are reasonable.
