Is your face feeling a little flat, a little saggy, or a little tired?

As we age, we lose fat (or volume) in our faces. Many of the visible signs of aging are a direct result of this volume loss.  As facial tissues thin out, lines are etched around the nose and mouth, and our cheeks begin to look hollow. Dermal fillers replace lost volume to plump thin lips, smooth wrinkles, enhance shallow contours, soften facial creases, and improve the appearance of scars.

    What are dermal fillers?

Dermal fillers are gel-like substances that are injected beneath the skin to restore lost volume, smooth lines and soften creases, or enhance facial contours.

    How do dermal fillers work?

Dermal fillers can restore the fullness common to youthful skin. Facial changes caused by fat loss underneath the skin will not respond to treatments like BOTOX alone. For these issues, we use dermal fillers, such as Juvederm®, Restylane®, and Volbella® add volume underneath the skin. Dermal fillers are particularly effective in the depressions around the corners of the mouth and cheekbones. There are many different filler options, and often we will use a combination of different fillers in different areas to get the results you are looking for. optimal correction.

How long do dermal fillers last?

Most dermal fillers last anywhere from 9 to 12 months, depending upon how the patient responds and which areas we are treating. Some of the newer fillers have produced results that last 15 to 18 months.

Do dermal fillers have side effects?

Any cosmetic injection treatment, including dermal fillers, has
    potential side effects
. Dr. Purewal will take time to talk with you about any potential side effects before you determine whether dermal fillers are right for you, and which fillers will provide optimal results based on your goals and skin type.

Are patients typically happy with their results?

Yes. It’s important to understand that you aren’t going to get facelift results from a non-surgical treatment such as dermal fillers. However, many of our patients choose a combination of treatments, such as Botox + dermal fillers + photofacials, that can help rejuvenate skin and restore a youthful appearance.

What dermal fillers do you offer?

Different fillers produce different results. To address a wide spectrum of concerns, Dr. Purewal offers a variety of fillers including:

    • Voluma
    • Restylane Lyft
    • Vollure
    • Volbella

    FAQ: Dermal Fillers

    What are injectable fillers?

Injectable fillers can fill in wrinkle lines, furrows, and contour cheekbones, chins, noses and jawlines. They can also volumize cheeks and plump up lips. Fillers can be derived from natural materials (like hyaluronic acid that is present in every living organism) or from synthetic materials (like poly lactic acid that is in Sculptra).

What should I expect to look like immediately after?

Fillers have an immediate effect. You will see improvement before you leave the office. There may be some swelling which accentuates the effect of the filler, but this is usually gone within a day or so. Depending on the area treated, there may be bruising that can last on average 1-2 days. Ice packs can help minimize bruising and swelling along with Arnike Forte. Make-up can be applied the day after treatment to camouflage bruising.

What should I avoid after being treated with injectable fillers?

Both 1-2 weeks before and for several days after treatment, avoid anything that may thin the blood such as aspirin, aleve, ibuprofen, and fish oils. Do your best to not lay on your face. Wait 2 weeks to before getting a facial or a dental appointment. No make-up can be applied over the area injected on the day of your treatment, however, it may be worn again the next day.

    How long will results last?

Depending on which filler is used on which part of the face, it can last from 3 months to 2 years.

Will lip gloss prolong the effects of filler in the lips?

Yes, any over the counter lip enhancing product will cause some swelling. Since lip filler attracts water, the use of the two together will have a more profound effect.

Dermal Fillers (Facial Fillers) in New Jersey

Facial fillers (aka dermal fillers or injectables) are currently an extremely popular non-surgical option for addressing the signs of aging and plumping the lips. These non-invasive treatments allow expert injectors to restore volume in areas that have become hollow. In addition, injectables can address the wrinkles and fine lines that have developed over time. At Fresh Face & Eye in New Jersey, Dr. Baljeet K. Purewal uses dermal fillers to address lost facial volume and plump up thin lips.

What Causes the Volume Loss That New Jersey Dermal Fillers Are Used to Address?

It is the thinning of tissues or the loss of facial fat that is directly responsible for many of the undesirable facial characteristics that develop with age. Nonetheless, strategically placed dermal filler injections can restore this lost volume, thus, rejuvenating these hollow areas in the face.

Which Facial Characteristics Can Dr. Purewal Address with Injectables at Her New Jersey Office?

Due to her skill, artistic vision and familiarity with the facial structure, New Jersey Expert Injector Dr. Baljeet Purewal can use fillers to rejuvenate and beautifully contour her patients’ faces.

    • Tear troughs and hollowing beneath the eyes.
    • Smoker’s lines, which are the vertical lines that develop around the mouth.
    • Thin lips.
    • Lack of facial definition and contouring (e.g., cheekbones, noses, chins and jawlines).
    • An undefined lip border (add definition to the vermilion border to create a cupid’s bow).
    • Undesirable nose characteristics (i.e., non-surgical rhinoplasty [nose job]).
    • Marionette lines (i.e., these are the lines that run down from the corners of the mouth towards the chin).
    • Nasolabial folds (i.e., these lines run from the nose to the mouth).
    • An undefined chin.
    • Hollow-looking cheeks.
    • Depressed scars (e.g., acne scars).
    • Hollowed temples.

Multiple Areas Can Be Addressed During One Treatment Session

These fillers can be used to improve facial definition, which is why they are extremely effective when creating voluptuous lips, prominent cheekbones and a fresh, youthful appearance.

What Causes the Undesirable Facial Characteristics that Develop with Age?

The facial characteristics that develop as part of the natural-aging process occur due to environmental factors as well as because of the decline in the body’s production of the proteins that make up the support structure of the skin (i.e., collagen and elastin).

What Does an Injectable Filler Consist Of?

Injectable fillers are gel-like materials of various consistencies. An injectable can be created using synthetic materials or using natural materials. For example, Sculptra consists of the synthetic polymer poly-L-lactic acid; whereas, Restylane Lift consists of hyaluronic acid, which is a natural material that is present in every living thing.

The treatment area dictates which product will provide the patient with optimal results.

An experienced Expert Injector like Dr. Baljeet K. Purewal who is familiar with facial structure variations, understands the difference between the seven basic face shapes and knows which of the fillers to use in any given area can successfully contour a patient’s face.

Why Are There So Many Different Kinds of Dermal Fillers?

There are numerous injectables available because the consistency of these gel-like fillers varies.

Knowing the consistency of each injectable is vital because it helps determine where the filler should be used. This is just one of the reasons that it is essential for an injector to be familiar with all the dermal filler products that are available.

During a treatment session, Dr. Baljeet K. Purewal usually targets several areas therefore, to provide the patient with optimal results, Dr. Purewal may use a combination of dermal fillers during a single session.

    Injectables and Their Uses

As an experienced expert injector with extensive knowledge related to facial structure and shape, Dr. Baljeet K. Purewal uses injectables to create her patients the youthful-looking, beautifully contoured facial features and well-defined, plump lips they desire.

    For treating the lips:

An injector who is treating volume loss, naturally thin lips, undefined lips or lip wrinkles must take an extremely careful approach. The skin on the lips is thin, which is why it is particularly important that the improvements made with fillers look good and feel natural. To accomplish this, a thin injectable is required.

Some of the injectables Dr. Purewal uses for the lips include:

    • Volbella – to address lip wrinkles.
    • Restylane Silk – to add volume. Using a filler with a thin gel consistency ensures that the improvements Dr. Purewal makes are subtle and allow for the natural movement of the lips.

If an inexperienced injector uses a thicker gel to plump the lips, the patient’s lips will be too firm, which results in stiff lip movement. When this happens, the patient’s lips can actually resemble plastic.

Fillers for addressing volume loss in the face:

Numerous fillers are available to treat volume loss in the face. Dr. Purewal draws upon her experience with dermal fillers to determine which injectable would serve the patient the best. The fillers used for facial volume are usually of a thicker consistency. Using the thicker gel is essential to ensuring that the product can provide sufficient support for the patient’s cheeks.

Some of the fillers used to address volume loss in the face include:

    • Sculptra – this product has poly-L-lactic acid in its formulation and can be injected to create natural-looking fullness in the mid face as well as in the temples.
    • Juvéderm Voluma – for the most part, this product was developed to improve facial volume as well as for contouring purposes. Juvéderm Voluma is usually injected into the cheeks.
    • Restylane Lyft – this product consists of hyaluronic acid and was initially developed to add volume in the cheeks; however, Restylane Lyft can also be used to contour other areas.

    Fillers for addressing nasolabial folds:

These folds run from each corner of the nose downward to the corners of the lips. Nasolabial folds result due to a combination of repeated facial movements in conjunction with a decrease in the production of collagen and elastin. The visibility of these folds can be exacerbated by the unflattering shadows they create on the face.

Some of the fillers used to address nasolabial folds include:

    • Sculptra – this product stimulates collagen production, which gradually increases the support beneath the folds, thus, reducing their visibility.
    • Restylane Defyne and Restylane Refyne – both of these products are created using hyaluronic acid. These fillers differ in the way their molecules are cross-linked. Defyne is designed to provide support, whereas, Refyne is used when focusing on flexibility.

How Does a Facial Filler Work?

While BOTOX is used to address muscles that are causing changes in facial characteristics: A facial filler is designed to restore lost volume so that the individual looks youthful and more refreshed.

Fillers are injected just beneath the skin. After injection, the patient’s body increases its production of elastin and collagen. Collagen adds volume, which firms and strengthens the skin. Elastin assists in making the skin more flexible and tighter, which allows it to stretch and then easily bounce back into place.

An Initial Consultation and Filler Treatment Session in NJ

To determine a patient’s candidacy for treatment, during the initial consultation Dr. Baljeet Purewal assesses the areas of the face that are bothersome for the patient.

Once the assessment is complete, Dr. Purewal makes recommendations as to which fillers she believes would benefit the patient the most. She will also discuss which areas are suitable for treatment with fillers.

An initial consultation for hollow tear troughs and dark circles beneath the eyes:

During this initial consultation, Dr. Purewal assesses the patient’s eyes to determine if he or she is a good candidate for dermal filler treatments to address tear trough hollowing.

If the patient is eligible, a treatment session will be scheduled. After the patient’s treatment, he or she will enjoy a brighter facial expression, will look more youthful, rejuvenated and refreshed.

Preparing for a New Jersey Facial Filler Treatment

Two weeks before their treatment patients must avoid taking any herbal supplements, vitamins or medications that could thin the blood.

Medications to avoid include Aleve, aspirin and ibuprofen. In addition, patients should discontinue taking fish oil.

If a patient is taking a prescribed blood thinner or is on an aspirin regimen, he or she needs to continue taking these medications until the prescribing medical professional approves the patient’s request to discontinue taking the medication for the two weeks leading up to treatment and the 72 hours thereafter.

Please refrain from wearing makeup to the office on the day of treatment.

What to Expect During a Filler Treatment in New Jersey

Prior to starting any injectable treatment, a topical numbing cream is applied. This ensures the patient remains comfortable throughout the injectable treatment session.

    Treating Hollow Tear Troughs

Dr. Purewal injects the dermal filler directly into the tear trough. By injecting the filler into this area, the volume in the tear trough is restored. In addition, the dark circles beneath the eyes become less noticeable.

The tear trough treatment is not suitable for everyone, which is one of the reasons that scheduling an appointment with an experienced expert injector is essential.

Addressing Lax Facial Skin and Issues Related to the Cheekbones

Using a filler, Dr. Baljeet Purewal can provide her patients with cheekbones that are more defined and appear to be resting at a higher position on the face, she can also use fillers to plump the cheeks and tighten facial skin:

To create a more defined cheekbone, Dr. Purewal injects the filler along the bone’s contour. She may also add volume to the cheeks, which helps address lax facial skin.

    A Non-Surgical Rhinoplasty (aka Non-Surgical Nose Reshaping)

Using fillers, Dr. Baljeet K. Purewal can make a variety of changes to the nose: Procedure specifics depend on what the patient wants to accomplish with injectables.

Treating Nasolabial Folds, Smoker’s Lines, Marionette Lines and a Natural Resting-Face Frown

As time passes, the repeated movements made while smiling, talking, laughing, kissing or smoking can lead to the development of permanent facial lines and folds. These lines may run from the nose down to the outer corners of the lips (i.e., nasolabial folds), small vertical creases may form around the mouth (i.e., smoker’s lines), lines can develop at the corners of the mouth and then run down toward the chin (i.e., marionette lines). In addition, some people have a resting face with a natural frown. Dr. Baljeet Purewal can address each of these issues with fillers to provide the patient with a rejuvenated, youthful appearance.

    Lip Augmentations

Individuals who would like shapelier or larger lips may be good candidates for a lip augmentation.

After having this procedure to add volume to the lips, the need to overline the lips to create the illusion of fullness is eliminated.

When it comes to lip augmentations, as long as the appropriate filler is used, the patient enjoys lips that remain soft and feel natural.

What to Expect After a New Jersey Dermal Filler Treatment

Patients notice results immediately. Inflammation is expected and will initially accentuate the filler’s effect; however, the swelling usually dissipates within 24 to 48 hours.

There may or may not be bruising. If there is, it usually only lasts a day or two.

Patients can use ice packs in combination with Arnike Forte to reduce inflammation and minimize any bruising.

The day after treatment patients can resume wearing makeup.

Following treatment, it is imperative that patients wait at least two weeks before they have dental work done or a facial.

Avoid putting pressure on the face even while lying down.

Medications, herbal supplements and foods that are known to cause thinning of the blood must be avoided for 72 hours after the treatment.

Are There Any Side Effects Associated with Dermal Filler Injections?

All injection treatments have potential side effects, however, Dr. Purewal takes the time to discuss the possibility of side effects with the patient before the decision is made whether to have dermal filler injections.

How Long Will the Results Last?

The results attained with the traditional fillers can last anywhere from three to 12 months. Fillers from the most recent generation have lasted anywhere from 15 to 24 months. The length of time the results last depends on the patient’s response to the filler as well as the areas that received treatment.
